Prepare to Spend Money After the Move PDF Print E-mail
Your new home will likely be the biggest purchase you will ever make. Be prepared. This is only the beginning of a year-long process that will include furnishing, decorating, personalizing and enhancing.

On average, buyers of new homes will typically spend $8,600 on appliances, furnishings and property alterations in the first year of ownership. This is nearly 2.5 times the $3,132 that the average non-moving homeowner spends in a year. The average buyer of an older home built between 10 and 20 years ago spends more than $6,500.

A large share of spending by new-home buyers occurs shortly after the home is purchased. Statistics show that nearly half of the money spent by a new-home buyer is spent during the first quarter after the home is purchased. By the fourth quarter, spending reverts to that of a non-moving owner.

If you've purchased a new home in the past, you won't be surprised to learn that a great deal of the money spent in the first year of ownership goes to furnishings. From sofas, chairs and tables to linens, rugs and blinds, buyers of newer homes spend four times more on furniture than non-moving owners in a year, or nearly $3,700 compared to $783. Living room, kitchen, dining room and bedroom furniture are high on home buyers shopping lists, along with window blinds, curtains and carpeting.

Alterations and repairs to your home on an average will cost you just over $3,000 during the first year. Included on many people's wish list are decks and porches, painting and fences.

Interestingly, appliances account for $1,900 in spending during the first year. While many may not think of a computer as an appliance, they account for the largest share of spending in this category with an average cost of $249. Lawn equipment, refrigerators, stereo equipment, televisions and other appliances not usually included in the price of a new home also account for a high percentage of appliance spending.
