The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the number of people with asthma has more than doubled since 1980. Now, more than ever, Americans are taking advantage of home pollution prevention and removal tips to rid their homes of the pollutants and irritants that can cause illness and even death.
According to Sam Hooper Samuels of Real Simple magazine, home pollution can be prevented by following these tips:
Keep your home ventilated. Unventilated homes trap pollutants and allergens inside your home. Leave inner doors and windows open as much as possible to circulate air. Install kitchen and bathroom vents to push air out. Also, place fans to create airflow within the home, especially in apartments and one-story homes.
Get your home tested for two of the deadliest air hazards, carbon monoxide and radon. You can also buy carbon-monoxide detectors for your home.
Leave irritants at the door. Don't allow shoes to be worn inside the home. Change your clothes as soon as you enter the home after gardening or mowing.
Shower at night when possible, especially if you have allergies. Otherwise, Irritants can stick to your hair and seep into your pillow at night. This can allow repeated exposure and prolong allergy symptoms.
Consider bare floors. Rugs and carpeting can trap pollutants in the fabric. Hardwood floors allow more air circulation to occur throughout the home.
Vacuum and vacuum often. Experts recommend vacuuming at least weekly to filter the air, more if you have allergies. When vacuuming, make certain to include furniture and any cloth surfaces that can trap irritants.
Replace furnace filters every three months on forced-air systems. This inexpensive tip is the most important step in air filtration of your home.
Control moisture levels. High humidity in your home can be signaled by frequent window condensation. Remember that basements can be especially damp and may require a dehumidifier. Also, keep firewood outdoors; only bring in what you plan to burn that day.
While many believe that houseplants improve air quality, their soil can create excess moisture and store molds. Avoid over watering and repot them if they begin to smell moldy.
Finally, secondhand smoke is often considered one of the worst home pollutants. Restrict smoking to the outdoors if at all possible.
