Home Builders, Designers Compete to Kansas City’s Best

For 60 years home builders and interior designers have been showcasing their talents and abilities on the Parade of Homes. Each year, entries on the parade compete for the prestigious Pick of the Parade and Distinctive Plan & Design Awards to earn the ultimate distinction of being considered at the top of Kansas City new home construction and design.

Homes in each contest are judged based on a meticulously refined set of criteria developed by a committee of industry professionals. Over 70 building and design experts from across the country will convene in Kansas City Sept. 14-15 to tour, critique and evaluate the homes entered in these highly competitive contests. Homes in this year’s competitions range from the low $100,000s to more than
$1.6 million.

Featuring the very top in Kansas City new home construction, the Pick of the Parade Awards set apart the best from the rest. The awards recognize winning homes based on outstanding construction performance, the standard of materials used and the overall construction of the home. Judges take note of attributes ranging from the overall impression of the home’s atmosphere all the way down to the smallest details such as product selection and cleanliness. This year’s competition includes homes entered in 30 categories based upon price and housing style, all of which will be battling for the coveted Grand Award and First Runner-Up honors.

Homes entered in the Distinctive Plan & Design Awards will be complete with furnishings and interior design. Attention to detail in regards to everything from curb appeal to color composition are crucial in this competition. Judges will pay particular attention to the execution and application of each detail of interior design and architecture. This year homes compete in 23 price categories for the First Place and Second Place awards.

Winners of both the Pick of the Parade and Distinctive Plan & Design awards will be revealed on Thursday, Sept. 20, on the parade’s official Web site at www.kcparadeofhomes.com. The list of award winners will also be featured in the Kansas City Star and other local newspapers the week of Sunday, Sept. 23. The distinguished award-winning homes are available to view during the Parade of Homes, Sept. 16-30. All homes are open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
