Permit Reports

Residential Permit Activity Shows Signs of Slow Rebound

For the second consecutive month, single-family permit activity in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area showed signs of a possible recovery. During the month of May, 838 single-family permits were issued metro wide, bringing the year-to-date total to 3,505. Olathe remains the top-permitting city through May with 566 single-family permits issued year-to-date. Ranking second in the number of single-family permits issued year-to-date is Kansas City, Mo., with 457. Overland Park and Lee’s Summit are the third and fourth top-permitting cities with 361 and 336 single-family permits issued respectively.

Rounding out the top-permitting cities year-to-date are Shawnee, 230; Lenexa, 134; Blue Springs, 132; Raymore, 112; Independence, 101; and Kansas City, Kan., 74.

“Comparing the first five months of 2001 to the same time period in 2000 reflects a 14 percent decrease in the number of single-family permits issued,” said Tim Underwood, Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Association. “While it’s looking like we have been picking up some steam, only four of the top ten permitting cities — Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Raymore and Kansas City, Kan., — are ahead of figures recorded last year.”

The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (HBA) is the voice of the housing industry and the source for housing information.
