Year-to-date, single-family permit activity figures total 4,238. By comparison, 4,771 single-family permits were issued through June 2000.

“The month’s permit result is great news for the housing industry,” said Tim Underwood, Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. “At the end of May, permit activity for the year was 14 percent behind figures recorded during the first months of last year. It’s exciting to see that we picked up some steam this month.” Permit activity during the first six months of 2001 is 11 percent behind figures during the same period in 2000.

Olathe remains the top-permitting city through May with 683 single-family permits issued. Ranking second in the number of single-family permits issued for the year-to-date is Kansas City, Mo., with 568. Overland Park and Lee’s Summit are the third and fourth top-permitting cities with 430 and 407 single-family permits issued respectively.

Rounding out the top permitting cities for the year-to-date are Shawnee, 264; Blue Springs, 169; Lenexa, 155; Independence, 137; Raymore, 128; and Platte County, 114.
