The permit numbers make
home builders cautiously optimistic for
a good year, according to HBA executive
vice president Tim Underwood. He noted that
the cities benefiting from new home construction
are cities offering more affordable housing
choices, particularly for working families.
"Areas such as Gardner
and Raymore are drawing more buyers due
to the housing choices available there,"
Underwood said. "It is a 'drive till
you qualify' situation, where first-time
home buyers are forced to live further
and further away from the city in order
to find new homes in their price range."
Housing affordability is
just one of the main topics that will
be discussed March 22 at a public forum
on increasing housing opportunity in metropolitan
Kansas City. The HBA, the Mid-America
Regional Council and Fannie Mae will present
the forum, being held in conjunction with
the HOME SHOW and Flower, Lawn & Garden
Show at Bartle Hall. Registration information
is available online at www.kchba.org.
Olathe continues to lead
the list of single-family permits with
204 permits issued through February. Kansas
City, Mo., is next with 136, followed
by Lee's Summit with 120 permits.
Rounding out the top-permitting
cities for the month are Gardner, 57;
Shawnee, 55; Leawood and Lenexa, 54; Raymore,
48; Independence, 27; and Jackson County,
26.
The Home Builders Association
