Jackson County accounts
for much of the rise in activity with a
34 percent increase. Areas with the largest
gains in the county are Raytown, up 220
percent; unincorporated Jackson County,
up 162 percent; Grain Valley, up 116 percent;
and Independence, up 72 percent. Lee's Summit,
with a 23 percent increase, is the No. 3
city in the metro in permit activity.
The strength of the Jackson
County housing market illustrates how
a mix of housing choices is essential
to economic growth, said HBA Executive
Vice President Tim Underwood.
"Homebuyers are not
one-size fits all," Underwood said.
"You need choices for everyone from
first-time buyers through the baby boomers
and beyond. The mix of housing choices
available in Jackson County has no doubt
contributed to the increase. However,
there is still strong housing demand for
working families that remains unmet in
areas such as Lee's Summit."
New home buyers will have
a golden opportunity to see the mix of
housing choices available in Kansas City
on this year's Spring Homes Tour, which
April 21 through May 5. A total of 514
new homes throughout the metropolitan
area will be open from noon to 7 p.m.
daily. Information on the 40th anniversary
Spring Homes Tour is available online
at www.springhomestour.com.
Olathe continues to lead
the list of single-family permits with
314 permits issued through March. Kansas
City, Mo., is next with 249, followed
by Lee's Summit with 212 permits.
Rounding out the top-permitting
cities for the month are Overland Park,
106; Independence, 91; Shawnee, 88; Lenexa,
85; Raymore, 78; Leawood, 73; and Jackson
County and Platte County, 68.
The Home Builders Association
of Greater Kansas City (HBA) is the voice
of the housing industry and the source
for housing information. Comprising more
than 1,000 member companies, the HBA represents
an industry that contributes more than
$2.5 billion to the Kansas City economy
and supports more than 36,000 jobs in
the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
