Outdoor Spaces Offer Extended Living Areas Nearly Year Round
 |
Parade No. 181 by Ashner Construction Company in Overland Park's Mills Farm showcases many of the most exciting and dramatic trends in outdoor living. |
From magazine covers to television programs it is obvious that building an outdoor patio, deck or screened porch is one of the most popular design trends in housing. However these outdoor living spaces are no longer just a place to sit and enjoy nature, they have blossomed into elaborate extensions of the house that are perfect for entertaining friends or for regular family gatherings.
The foundation of a great outdoor living space has many forms. While wood or composite decks are still popular, the trend now is toward a natural stone or tile patio which is low maintenance and provides cooler temperatures for bare feet. In the Midwest flagstone, limestone, granite and slate in either irregular or rectangular shapes make for some of the most beautiful patterns and colors. These stunning patios are often surrounded by luscious landscaping, soothing fountains and soft lighting to create the perfect ambiance.
To add to the function of the space and allow it to stand alone, outdoor kitchens with built-in grills or stoves and refrigerators allow the chef to stay outside and enjoy the party. Other upper end features include customized bars and weather protected areas for outdoor plasma screen viewing. Depending on the season of your favorite sport, the outdoor temperature might be a deterrent. Therefore massive fireplaces, gas heaters, overhead fans and water cooling misters offer better temperature control during the mid-summer and late fall months.
An outdoor living space wouldn’t be complete without plenty of places to sit, eat and relax. The furnishings available for these uses have evolved to include waterproof designs that are soft, durable and have a living room sofa type appearance. Even rugs have been designed to be used outside in the elements without fear of disintegration mold or mildew. All the trend in bringing the great indoors, out.
